Blog 37 - Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Here are some numbers for your brains:

11 - ELEVEN school shootings in 2018
17 - SEVENTEEN deaths in the latest Florida shooting
16 - SIXTEEN more in critical condition and hospitalized
1 - WEAPON and SHOOTER
3,000 - THREE THOUSAND STUDENTS AFFECTED
129 - ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-NINE TEACHERS/STAFF AFFECTED
4 - FOUR KILOMETERS from where I stay in Florida
+ an infinite amount of other students, parents, teachers and staff scared of a repeat

Even though Canada and U.S.A. have VERY different GUN LAWS -  does the latest shooting scare you?  Does it make you think that something could happen here?

Do you believe WE do enough to prepare our students of a CODE RED?

What suggestions do you have?

Explain.

  1. I think that are Code red at St. Thomas isn't as well prepared as well as some other schools because at my elementary and now this school we thought to ourselves this is a drill, but what if it isn't the we all think to ourselves we can talk it's only a drill. We've had one code red when they promised us 3 but the last 2 are unknown by all students and teachers. We're in term 3 and I don't think there will be anymore but I need to know what to do in a life threatening matter, I'm a lot like ponyboy I barely use my head and when a time happens that a sick man/woman pulls down a fire alarm at a high school and has a weapon that severely injure or take a human's life that is when you realize that you don't know what to do. I feel like St. Thomas needs a lot more code red drills because after hearing about the school shooting I turned a bit like Johnny I'm afraid of my own shadow. If ever this happens at St. Thomas I don't think we will be prepared because in one of my class that we had a code red we were talking to each other, if that ever happens in history we will all be killed but not the teacher. Are plan in History is that are teacher will put a sign that says " They are there " with an arrow pointing at the corner were he told us to go if ever that happens. If any suggestions that we need at st. Thomas is that we need to be way more prepared.

  2. Yes, I think the latest shooting was scary because if I was there during the shooting I would be extremely scared because he is shooting everyone and the gun he was using (AR-15 Semi Automatic) is such a powerful gun that it was military inspired! I don't think this will happen in Canada because I Canada we only sell hunting rifles for hunting and they are snipers so they wouldn't be use in school shootings. Yes I think we are prepared enough.

  3. I think are code red preparations are good but everything always needs improvement. I think that we should practice code red once a month and the principals and vice principals should think of every possible option. one of my suggestions is as I said before we need to practice code red more than at least once a year we need 8 times a year and even then

  4. It doesn't scare me really. Yeah its possible but Im not very worried. I don't have a reason why im not scared but im just not. I feel like we should prepare a bit more for code reds. Like we only do 1 simple drill. In my opinion we should train what to do like where to hide and stuff.

I got exactly 60 words in the word counter :P ps. Wrote this in advanced but posted late.

  5. Well, if I have to be honest here... I don't really feel scared about it. Sure, there are chances it could happen, but there are pretty slim chances that someone would want to do that (and let's be honest, how would they get a gun?).
I think we should have CODE RED drills more often - we had only one this year. Also, I think just saying 'CODE RED' would tell the attacker there are children in the building. Saying something like 'We are now checking the ventilation system' could be announced on a ped day, and might leave the attacker with doubts.

  6. Yes it does make me scared but i don’t think it will happen here and if it did and I was in school it would be terrified and scared and probably would start to cry and I will prop only feel a little bit safe because I would be in st Thomas. And because I trust the teachers in this school

  7. it makes me terrified even tho i don't know a lot of the people in the class i feel that nobody should be hurt i find that at are school we should do a lot more code reds. in the USA they band KINDER EGGS but not guns who is that stupid oh wait trump is like who is that dumb. the day before the shouting a 7 YEAR OLD KID asked trump how he will keep kids safe in school thank u for reading.

    2. You guys are missing the point it could happen anytime even tho there are gun laws if some one gets there hands on a gun they can come and shoot

  8. That's was my worst fear growing up in school because i never wanted to get hurt. I mean a school shooting can happen any where at any time. I feel that we don't practice enough for code red, because if were not ready every won't no what to do and it will be a big panic. I think we should do a code red 1 per week. That would be a good idea because we would get lot's of practice and we will no what to do in a scary time like that.

    1. But if we practice every week then people will get tired of it and will think it's a drill

  9. I don;t think there will be any shootings at our schools here in canada, we have way different laws and protections. It does scare me but i know that we do not have enough code reds in our school. We wont know what to do if something ever happens.

  10. I don’t like school shootings but they don’t scare me because of the Canadian gun laws. The Canadian gun laws are better than the American laws because in America, there are young adults with guns and it’s for “protection”but all it does is make more people die. Let’s say somebody’s mugging you with a knife, odds are there not going to stab you so just give them the money you don’t have to shoot them. Thank you for reading my blog!

  11. Yes the latest gun shooting did scare me because it could happen to any school which is a very scary thing to think about. Also it scares me because a lot of innocent kids could be shot. I think there is a chance that we could have a shooting in Montreal because they're those types of people that will do it. I think we don't do enough code red's because what if it happens and we forgot what to do. That will cause lots of injuries and death if we don't practice it. I suggest we do it 3 practice runs in the whole school just to be safe.

  12. Yes, the latest shooting does scare me. I just don't know what could happen next, and if it's safe to go to America anymore. I don't think the shooting would happen in Canada because you can't really get a gun into Canada. I think it's really safe here and won't happen to us. No I don't think we do enough to prepare students for a Code Red. I think we should practice a Code Red at least 3 times because 1 time is not enough to me. Thank you for reading.

  13. The latest shooting makes me think a lot about how easy it could be to do a school shooting. Even thought you are not allowed (you need to have a permit) guns in Canada a few of people still have. I do not think we do enough code red and when we did them some people did not do it seriously. Thank you.

  14. The latest school shooting kind of scares me. I don’t think that a shooting can happen here because even my cousin went to St Thomas and graduated like 5 years ago and she’s never said that there was a shooting there. The school shooting scares me because he pulled the fire alarm and now if we do a fire drill, I wouldn't trust it at all. I think the code red at St Thomas is good because we all hide at the back of the class but I think we need to do more drills because we only did it once this whole year.

  15. The latest school shooting doesn’t really scare that much. Some times I wonder if it’s possible that it will happen at are school, but for the most part I feel pretty safe. I think us students and staff should practice code red more because we don’t practice it a lot. Also if for example it does happen to be honest I don’t think we would be as prepared as we should be and that’s a little scary.

  16. I get very scared when things like this happen because it could happen anywhere. I think that it could happen anywhere but it is very rare because there are no guns allowed in Canada. I am very proud and happy that I am a canadian. I think that it is important that we practice for Code Red situations and I am glad we do them because some schools might not do them. I think that we could do them more often to make sure we are more prepared and we are safer too.

  17. you never think anything is going to happen to you or the people you know or love until it actually happens. That school shooting does worry me but it doesn't scare me it just makes me think all of those people who were killed they woke up think oh shoot im late for school or something along those lines but they would have never in a million years thought that that day would be the day their lives would end or about how all the people who lost there children or their best friends .There was a story about a mother of a student who was killed yelling at a protest "tomorrow i have to go to my 14 year old daughter's funeral" .There is always a possibility that something could happen here in Canada but if it did and a guy did have a gun i DO NOT think we would be prepared for that situation maybe if a random psycho who wasn't armed and didn't have the strength to brake a window or a door came to the school we would be kinda prepared but not if the dude had a gun we would not be prepared at all he or she could could shoot through the door or for classes on the first floor he could look through the window and see us by the wall and brake the window and jump right in we are not prepared.

  18. Of course I am scared of the school shootings. Just hearing about it gives me the chills. I haven't gone through a code red drill since the beginning of the year and I think it should be something that we should do like 2-3 times a year. It would make me feel a lot better. Maybe just say its a drill or I might pass out. I know our gun laws are a lot more different than the ones in the United-States but it shouldn't stop us from taking drills anyway. For things we could do to help I have a big imagination like installing metal doors that fall down when there is a code red and protects us in the classroom but it would probably not happen.

  19. I think we are not prepared. If a code red happens we would definitely not have experience. I am going to Florida during march break and i stay 5 to 10 minutes away from were the shooting took place. Thats pretty scary. I think in the U.S they should ban guns like we do here in Canada.

  20. Yes, the latest school shooting has got me a bit nervous. Even though Canada has very strict gun laws, school shootings can occur anywhere at any time. That’s why I think we should have more code reds. My fear is if we have too many, around the same time period, people will take them less seriously. I also suggest that we have an assembly on this topic. What happened in Florida was terrible and I hope it doesn’t happen again.
